Beach combing is definitely one of the nicest perks of my job, but is is also time consuming and challenging.

There is a lot of driftwood here, and even more beach stones. However, the vast majority of the wood is too big, too small, too beaten by the weather. The type of stone I like (rounded, smooth) is also not exactly abundant. So while it is a true pleasure to get out and walk the shoreline, finding nice materials certainly involves a lot of hiking. When I do spot a lovely piece of wood, a gorgeous stone, I still get so excited, even after all these years of collecting.

Back at my workshop, I choose from my collected treasures to assemble a great wind chime. When it all comes together so nicely, as in the wind chime pictured above, I breath a deep sigh of satisfaction.

When someone purchases, I am probably as excited as the customer, anticipating the arrival of their new art wind chime.

I love when everything just clicks, and I end up with a work I feel is so balanced, such as the wind chime pictured above. A little of everything, and it just works.

I particularly like this piece of driftwood. I found a few in this shape this year, and it took me a little while to figure it out. This is the 'in the tree' part of a branch— what would be a knot in a board. The tree part is softer wood, so the ocean washes / abrades the tree away, leaving this interesting, hard, piece of inner branch. Pretty cool!

My daily walk often takes me along the shore of the Pacific Ocean, down below our home. Sometimes I get lucky, and find a wonderful piece of driftwood, such as the one featured in the wind chime above. Or maybe a lovely rounded, smooth, beach stone catches my eye.

While the beaches here are full of stones, and driftwood, most are not for me. The wood, the stone, they have to be just right for me to lug home. Often I come home empty handed, and that is okay, too. Better nothing than the wrong thing. And there will be another day, another hike, soon-- another chance to maybe find just the right piece of wood or just the right stone.

When I do stumble upon a piece of wood like the one I used in this wind chime, my day brightens. When I don't find anything, well, at least I get a wonderful walk!

As soon  as I saw this piece of driftwood on the beach, I knew it would made a spectacular wind chime. This wood is overflowing with character. At 6.5 feet long, it will need space, but most people can easily find room by suspending it from the eves of their house. It could also be hung under a high deck, or from the branch of a large tree.

Most summer days, I take at least an hour off from working on my wind chimes to go on a walk down to the ocean. There I can stroll along the shore, and, with luck, find something interesting to bring home to make into a wind chime (so is that really taking time off from work?). Yesterday I found an especially attractive piece of driftwood: so much character!

The driftwood really matches with the antiqued copper of the chimes. I've never seen anything like it: a gorgeous piece of driftwood cut at both ends by a beaver. Perfect for one of my large outdoor handcrafted copper wind chimes. Then, even better, I found a smaller piece of beaver gnawed driftwood just a few weeks later, nearly in the same spot along the beach. So there is a little brother to the large one pictured above.

Spending a lot of time walking along the local beaches searching for great driftwood and wonderful beach stones is part of my job. A good part! The second part is searching through all the driftwood, stones, and glass pieces I have in my workshop, and combining them to make a creation that works for me aesthetically. Part of my job is to go beach combing-- quite a perk! Although there are tons of driftwood here on the Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada, it is actually quite challenging to find pieces suitable for my needs. Most pieces are way, way too large, and many of the smaller pieces are all smashed up. So I spend quite a few hours on the beach, looking for the 'good' stuff.

The design above is popular. I have been out of stock for several weeks, and only now am I starting to get a few more set to list on my website. Once I have all of them made, and photographed, i plan to place them on my website all at the same time. Probably around June 16-20th.

I also plan to make a few of the smaller chimes with driftwood and beach stones: I have some amazing wood for those. So keep an eye on Coast Chimes to see all these new West Coast chimes.
