The chime featured above consist of artist-made sea glass, a most glorious cobalt blue, copper wire, handmade copper hook, 3 hand cut brass chimes antiqued with a reactive (not paint or powder coating, this finish will not flake or wear off). The chimes are attached to a handmade copper hanger with 21 strand nylon coated stainless steel wire, secured with sterling silver crimps (no rust!).

Cobalt blue glass somehow just really goes perfectly with antiqued copper, as can be seen in the picture above. The glass looks awesome anytime, but really comes alive when the sunlight shines through from behind.

All the glass is artist-made beach glass, upcycled from old bottles. The copper is cut, brushed, treated with a reactive, steel wool brushed, hammered. The chimes are cut from brass and also treated with a reactive (a finish that will not peel or flake, but only look even better over time). These chimes are made to last, and may be enjoyed fully exposed to the elements all year long.

Large Glass and Copper Outdoor Wind Chimes

It's hard to believe this beautiful glass comes from old bottles: talk about great upcycling! It truly is awesome glass, with smooth edges and a mat finish. It is artist-made beach glass.

And it is hard to beat copper for outdoor decor. This wind chime is all copper and glass, with the exception of the solid red cedar wood roundel from which the chimes are suspended, and the beach stone clapper. All the hardware is handmade from copper (hooks, hooklets, rings). Even the wire used for the beach stone clapper is copper. So nothing is going to rot or break: this chime is made to last!

Making Exceptional Copper Wind Chimes

I sometimes see website tutorials on making your own copper wind chimes at home. They make it sound like you can read two paragraphs and make great chimes. I have to laugh. I've been making copper wind chimes for twenty years, thousands of sets, and I am still learning!

Above are some of the components that I hand make for my wind chimes. And ' hand make' should be underlined and bold. Sure, you can just saw up some copper pipes and string them onto a chunk of plywood with some fishing line. But that is not going to be beautiful, nor long-lasting.

From the old growth reclaimed red cedar roundel to the hand formed copper hooklets, these are the elements that take time, skill and experience. Most people figure out how to do something, and get better and faster at it. I have found with my chimes that I learned how to do them, and got better and slower at it. These days, I take far more care and pay far more attention to each element. They are a source of enormous pride for me, and so it's all worth it. And I know that no one is going to be reading a short tutorial and making anything even close to what I do.

Hooks and Connections, Copper, Handcrafted

The handcrafted copper hooklets and connectors for the beach stone clappers on my wind chimes, five sets. The two simple tools shown, and my hands, are all I use to make these copper works.

I have many tools, including many expensive ones like my saws and my drills. I like them all. But I take the most pleasure in my very simple tools, such as the wood spindle pictured above. With that simple, oversized pencil (and the pliers), I make all my copper hooks and connectors.

Shown above are five sets of small copper systems for attaching the beach stone clappers to my wind chimes. I string it all together with fine copper wire, and add a hammered antiqued copper windsail.

It 's time consuming to make each chime section— very labor intensive, with great attention to detail. But that's what makes it special.
