Using the very best materials is very important at Coast Chimes, so I was thrilled to recently source some stunningly beautiful salvaged locally milled red cedar. This is such awesome wood, as you can see from the pictures.

Red cedar is naturally extremely resistant to the environment. I further protect my wood with an very excellent Eco-oil, a finish that never peels or flakes.

The artist-made cobalt blue sea glass compliments this wood very nicely. And the antiqued copper is perfect, as well.

A treat for the eyes, a treat for the ears-- wonderful in any yard or garden, on any porch or deck.

It was a pleasant surprise a few weeks ago to discover a source for beautiful reclaimed and salvaged clear old growth red cedar. I scooped up a few prime lengths, and now I am starting to put some of the creations on my website (Coast Chimes) and in my Etsy Shop. It's a pleasure working with this gorgeous wood, and it's leading me into some new designs (see pic below).

For all my work, I always look for the finest materials. They can cost (a lot) more to source, but they are always worth it.

Woodworking, Coast Chimes

Fresh cut cedar drying after being oiled, at Coast Chimes
Cut and Oiled Cedar Drying at
Coast Chimes

Pictured above, freshly oiled cedar drying in my workshop. Cedar is my wood of preference, as it is local, and also highly resistant to the elements, even without my superior oil finish. It is also absolutely beautiful!

Many of the cut pieces pictured will be used to make my large kaleidoscope wind chimes, as pictured below. A few will also turn into freestanding kaleidoscope suncatchers. I already cut and washed the float glass to dimension, so once the oil has dried for a few days, I will be ready to assemble. Then I just have to wait for the last of the snow to melt in my backyard, where I take my pictures, photograph them, and post them to Etsy and to my Coast Chimes Website.

I rarely place my sculpted red cedar style of wind chime on sale, as they are very labor intensive to make. But I decided to put one on sale this week. It's beautiful!

There are lots of beautiful wind chimes (and other works for the home, yard, garden and office) on my website. It's worth visiting and looking around. You are sure to see things you have never seen before, as all my designs are original, unique and, of course, very well made.

I love red cedar, especially when treated with my eco-friendly tung nut oil finish. It's smooth, soft, smells good, and looks great! I think it compliments my glass and the copper very nicely. So I really like this wind chime!

Finally, most of the snow is gone. This is great, as taking pictures with a snowy background is a real drag-- messes up brightness and contrast. However, a lot of my supplies are still buried under deep snow behind the house, so it will be a while before certain project can be tackled. I'm looking so forward to spring, and especially summer!

Oooops!

wind chime, beach stone, copper, huge, large windchimeThe new giant chime natural beach stone wind chime. Sometimes, you just have to go back to the drawing board. See below for the previous version. For more information or to buy this wind chime, click here.

I started thinking that maybe it was not such a great idea to hang five very heavy chimes from glass. Then I woke up yesterday morning, and I was sure it was not a good idea. Back to the drawing board. It's really the chimes and the beach stone that should be the focus here, and the purplish glass detracted from that. Also, what could look nicer than beautiful red cedar? In the end, all is for the best. I like the new version better than the old.
